I was born in Luray, Va as one of five children. I grew up in the Shenandoah Valley and graduated from Page County High School in Shendandoah, Va. I came to North Carolina in 1994 as a single mother to join my sister in building a better life. I went to barber school to receive my Master Barber license and cut hair to provide for my daughter as well as pay for my college degree. I received my undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree from NC Agriculture & Technical State University and my Juris Doctor from UNC Chapel Hill School of Law. .
my legal experience
I begin my legal career with a short stint in private practice and in January 2007 I was sworn in as one of the Assistant District Attorney’s in Guilford County. I prosecuted misdemeanor and felonies in the district courts and the juvenile court. It was my honor to also serve as an Assistant Attorney General of North Carolina from 2011- 2016. There I served as a State civil defense attorney and argued before the NC Court of Appeals handling criminal appeals for the State. I have experience practicing before the Industrial Commission of North Carolina handling large and complex civil cases as well. I ran a successful campaign for District Court Judge in Guilford County in 2016.
It has been my honor to serve for the last year and nine months as one of Guilford County’s 14 District Court Judges. I have been able to preside over cases from misdemeanor criminal, all family/domestic legal matters, all juvenile legal matters, voluntary and involuntary commitment (mental health) matters, and small business matters where the amount in litigation is $25,000 or less. As a District Court Judge I have had the opportunity to touch more lives daily than any due to the number of litigants we see on a daily basis. I have had the opportunity to help others understand the judicial system better and understand how we serve the community as a whole as well as the litigants that come before us.
My Community Involvement
I also have been serving the State of NC for over 25 years locally and statewide through volunteering and mentorship. I committed to volunteering at the Guilford County Public Schools as a Greeter, Lunch and Reading Buddy, while still donating to the different organizations that help provide school supplies for teachers and children. I have served in many organizations as well as a board member of several boards to include, Junior League of Greensboro, Win-Win Solutions, American Heart Association, Guilford Community Fund Development, Family Service of the Piedmont, Guilford Guild, and High Point University Board of Visitors.
MY Commitment to you
I embark on my candidacy for Superior Court Judge with much excitement for the opportunity to serve the State of North Carolina at another level in the judiciary. The Honorable Patrice A. Hinnant has served in this particular seat since being appointed in 2009 and she has held this position with integrity and honor. I run knowing that to whom much is given much is required and assure the voters that I will do nothing short of making sure I also hold the position with integrity and honor when elected. I come behind Judge Hinnant with her support and with my humility and for your vote during early voting October 18th – November 2nd, 2018 and general election on November 6th, 2018. I bring my competence, fairness and firmness to this election and I ask you to place humility, integrity and respect on the bench for District 18A
